Safety and Health

Safety and Health

Safety is one of our core values. We are committed to create an incident-free workplace for all our stakeholders.

Our approach to safety management is guided by the Keppel Zero Fatality Strategy. Introduced in 2016, the strategy outlines actionable items to reduce workplace fatalities to zero through five strategic thrusts: building a high-performance safety culture, adopting a proactive approach to safety management, leveraging technology to mitigate safety risks, harmonising global safety practices and competency, and streamlining learning from incidents. The Keppel Group reports on its safety performance in our annual sustainability report.

Managing Safety

All employees and third-party suppliers and contractors are expected to abide by the Keppel Corporation HSE Policy which places the highest priority on the health and safety of people and the protection of assets and the environment.

Keppel Corporation established a Board Safety Committee (BSC) in 2006, the first by a publicly-listed company in Singapore, to review and develop safety policies across its multiple business units. The BSC provides strong and visible leadership and takes a hands-on approach in setting strategic directions to ensure consistently high safety standards across the Group.

The Group was conferred 36 WSH Awards in 2017 by the Singapore's WSH Council and Ministry of Manpower (MOM). This is the largest number of awards won by a single organisation in Singapore.

Of the 36 awards, Keppel O&M received 28 awards under the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects category, which recognises companies with good project safety and health management systems.

Keppel FELS and Keppel Singmarine, subsidiaries of Keppel O&M, also clinched the WSH Performance (Silver) Awards for exemplary safety performances and implementation of strong WSH management systems.

Keppel Merlimau Cogen, Keppel FELS, Keppel DHCS and Keppel Logistics garnered WSH Innovation Awards, which recognise companies for their efforts in creating solutions which help to improve safety at the workplace.

Building Skillsets

We empower and train our stakeholders to ensure that all personnel are kept updated on safety measures and best practices. Over 65,000 personnel have received training at the Keppel Safety Training Centre and Safety Awareness Centres since 2010. The Keppel Safety Training Centre at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore offers a complete range of safety training and certification courses in both trade-specific and broad-based skills for all levels of the workforce.

Strengthening Partnerships

To raise industry standards, we work closely with customers, suppliers, regulators and industry associations to implement initiatives and encourage our subcontractors to attend regular safety training. Keppel is also a sponsor of annual national safety events.

Occupational Health

In addition to a safe environment, we also aim to protect and promote the health of our workforce. Our workers undergo regular health checks and are to be certified fit before they can take on strenuous work. Exercise programmes, distribution of fruits and healthy lifestyle campaigns are in place across the Keppel Group to encourage employees to live active, balanced lifestyles.
