To the edge and back

After a month-long Clipper training, the Keppel Ambassadors return to shore and share lessons learnt onboard Uniquely Singapore.

“Training has opened a world of entirely new experiences and possibilities. I have discovered capabilities and strengths that I never thought I possessed! Beyond a test of my physical and mental limits, I now truly believe that nothing is impossible if I put my mind to it. Mind over matter, and we have to think fast as events can turn suddenly.”

“Participating in the Clipper Race is a personal challenge to break out of my comfort zone and do something radically different. The training has shown me the importance of team spirit. From sleep deprivation, seasickness and physical exhaustion to extreme weather conditions, it was only possible to overcome these personal challenges with team mates who encouraged each other along at every juncture.”

“My 20-pound weight loss is undeniable proof of the toughness of the Clipper training. It has shown me the importance of living life and living well, of keeping fit and healthy so as to be ready to take on new challenges and adventures in life. I have always been a lover of the sea, participating in sea-related activities like wakeboarding and power boating. Training has shown me a new love – sailing!”

“There were challenges of every kind that we encountered throughout training. It still amazes me that we had overcome all of it and survived to make it home in one piece. I think having the right and positive attitude makes a big difference. The thought of backing out never came to our minds, and also because we did not want to let our team mates down. Training has made me more receptive to challenges and facing them squarely in the eye now.”

“I now appreciate what we have in our everyday life much more than I used to. Simple activities that we normally take for granted, like being able to brush our teeth and shower, cannot be indulged daily on the boat to conserve what little water we have for cooking food and drinking for the entire crew. I’ve learnt to value these precious resources.”

“To sum up the training experience, I would say it was excruciating, exhilarating but most importantly, empowering. I came out of training feeling stronger than ever, as an individual, mentally, physically and emotionally. I’ve discovered that I am made for much more in life and it is only fear that stands in the way. Pushing beyond one’s threshold will be painful, but the triumph of success at the end is a trophy I give myself.”
